Old Bogwood

Hope this is in the right forum.

I just found out that my pleco needs bogwood in the tank to stay healthy and i had 2 pieces in my garage from an old aquarium setup.

It's been in the garage for about 6 months in a bag so i'm a bit worried it may be bad for the tank. I was going to soak it in tank water from a water change, would that be ok? or salt water? or boiling water?

or should i just buy some new bits?

any ideas?

just give it a scrub and it will be fine. it may need soaking before it sinks though depending on what wood it is or weighted down with a rock or something

Use it since you've got it. Since it's been in a bag you should be able to just give it a scrub and put it in the tank. Boiling is alright as long as you don't over do it. The wood will break down in the tank if it was over-boiled. I boil mine for no more than 20 mins and it's good to go.

yea i was just considering boiling it a bit just in case any nasties got into it while it was in the garage!

Oh my god! i got up this morning and my plec was playing in his bogwood and sucking on he glass again. he looks so happy again, well as much as a pleco can look "happy". i even turned the light on and he kept playing

@op Boiling old bog wood just makes it break down. and to kill all possible bacteria and baddies, you would need to heat it, all the way through, to over 150f!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

don't waste your time. give it a good scrub. soak it if you wish, then put it in your tank

I boiled it for 10 mins and then gave it a good scrub.No complaints from my pleco In fact i'm sure he gave me a thumbs up last nt!!
