apparently my high quality thermometer is not accurite. me mum came over and had a look at the fishtank. she remarked that the glass seemed hot. the thermometer showed a temp of 75 degrees F.
i went outside and grabbed the pool thermometer and popped it in the tank. went up to 92F!

so, no wonder what damage has been done?

OH MY GOODNESS!! 92!!! your fish must be close to boiling, gotta love heaters

are the fish okay?

With just platties in the tank I'd say no harm done. Platties are hard as nails and take high temps quite well as long as there's no sudden change.

I hope you rinsed that pool thermometer before using it! Chlorine in the tank will do more harm than the high temp!

hard as nails huh?

they have been in 92 degrees for a couple months now.. according to this website their max temp is 80F. thats 12 degrees overheated.

i sure hope they are not permanintly damaged.

92 is certainly hotter than it should be, but no where near too hot for life!

Remember our own body temperature is 97!

yea i recently had a 15 watt flourecent light, but i went to LFS and changed it to another light. there was no other 15 watts so i just stook the 25 watt. so then i left it there for about 20 mins and i saw my thermometer go from 72 to 83. I was ..Ahh crap..but i think when that happened, that might've helped my otos start mating.. ...i don't know..if you know something, let me know.
