I added my elephant nsoe to my 75 gallon community lastnight. All was fine all night, and all day. At 5 PM, I went to add a new fish, and my elephantnose was swimming irregularly. He turned around, and I saw it- a huge GASH. Now who the hell did it? I suspect either the Bala, or one of the 3 rosy barbs. The Bala's mouth is really the only one big enough to have done that... but I didn't think they were all THAT agressive... to remove somthing about the size of this: O from my elephant nose's side. Now he can't swim, lays either on his side or upside down... I'm hoping maybe he will come around, he's the most reslilient fish I've ever seen, and if any can make it, it's him.

Problem is.. I can't medicate elephant noses, so the only thing to do is watch him suffer and hope for the best.

Somthing is going to happen.... someone's finding a new home, maybe in the sky. But first I gotta find out who did it... or just be safe and get rid of all 4 of the possible culprates.

Weird, I added a black moor a few days ago... he's got all his muscle tissue intact...

is there any of the decor that could be the culprit? fish can go frantic, especially when trying to get used to new occupants. not saying that one of them did not bite him, but maybe that one of them chased him and he tore open his side on an edge. my pacu did this a while ago. healed up nicely. now that he is used to where everything is, he doesn't hit anything.

Calusa,

Sorry to hear about your elephantnose :( :(

There are a few items that you may want to try to keep the wound from getting infected.

1. Dick Boyds VitaChem....This is simply a liquid vitamin that works wonders!! Great for healing wounds as well as treating HITH and LLD ( hole in the head/ Lateral Line Disease) My personal favorite!!

2. Melafix....A lot of peeps swear by this stuff. I have used it in the past for wounds and to be honest with you have not seen any benefits with it!!

These are NOT harmful medications!! They would be totaally safe for ALL you fish.

Hope your EN get's better soon!!!

gah, it was too much for the little dude... nothing could have helped... he lost too much blood. Now I've gotta find homes for the prospective culprates... I'm probably going to take them to my LFS for a trade-in.

Theres a few decorations... a pilliar thing that I'm sure didn't cause it, and the others were his rocks for hiding, which he'd never had a problem with, and a flower pot... the gash looks like it had some depth to it.. I'm sure someone took a bite out of him, right where his electrical system was.

Elephant noses are hard to come by in this area... so it's gonna be a while before I can get another. I may get 2, because the LFS told me that if you introduce 2 of the same age, they won't fight... and I don't see how they could in the first place, with that huge appendage infront of their mouths. I kinda wish I had put him out of his misery last night... now that I see he died anyway.

First thing's first- the rosy barbs and balas are OUT. I still can't believe it, he's been with the rosy's before... with no problems, but all through the ordeal, they were watching him so closely as if they just wanted to rip him up. (I had him in one of those betta things you attach to the side, with the dividers removed, so if he needed to, he had quick access to the surface, I had access to him, and the fish didn't.)

Thanks for your responses.. I'm sure I'll get another as soon as those who may have caused it are weeded out, and I can find one again. I'll probably just stock the rest of the tank with some harmless goldfish... =P
