Hi Pauline and welcome to the site.

You can purchase any sponge media and cut it to size to fit the filter - you do not have to purchase Jewel sponges. Your LFS (local fish outlet) will stock sponges also you can get them from Amazon. It might wise to get coarse and fine - and have the coarse at the bottom of the filter with some fine at the top.
