Hi, I have a single male Neolamprologus brevis in a 10 gal set up to be a shell-dweller species tank. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble finding a female or two for him. In the mean time, I think he would benefit from having tankmates. The only problem is finding something that could work!

I need a fish that is:

small enough to fit in a 10 gal
sturdy
OK alone or in a small group 2-3
ideally middle to surface dwelling
can live in alkaline and hard water

I think some livebearers would work for this, but I was wondering if anyone knew of some oddballs that might work?

Malayan Halfbeak (Dermogenys pusilla) or the Celebes Halfbeak (Nomorhamphus liemi) will live under the surface in hard alkaline water and don't get very big.

Pseudomugils, that I mentioned in your other thread.

That's pretty much it for a small hard water tank with shell dwellers in. :)
