Oatmeal Algae?

i was changing water because it looked bad and was scrubbing down the sides of the tank when i go to change the filter i saw this

this is after two weeks and the filter is supposed to last a month or two

inside the tank the wall looks like this

Just gunk in the filter cartridge. When was the last time you cleaned it?

Swish it in old tank water and give it a good finger scrub.

Agree with PK, your filter media needs to be cleaned every so often so that the waste doesn't build up like this.

Take some tank water and put it in a clean bucket/bowl. Place the filter parts (not including the cord) in the bucket and wash off the waste. Make sure to put all parts in the right place when you are done.

Do not use tap water to clean your media as it may harm the beneficial bacteria that inhabit it.
