Hi I have an Oase Filtosmart Thermo 100 set up on one of my tanks and I don't know how to take it apart when I need to clean it or access the interior etc.

The inlet and outlet pipes connect to a plate you can twist out but will twisting this close off the water or will my tank just drain down? The other option I have is to close the inlet/outlet at the tank side of things through the flow controller but this does not seem 100% either as in my experience these dont provide a water tight seal when done all the way up? I'd still have all the water in the pipes to deal with.

In my biomaster there is a switch that disconnects the pipe section so you are more confident that its locking something off but on this one its just a case of twisting the whole unit to unlock it? I can't find a good video guide for this either...

Any help or guesses appreciated :)

I never used the Oase brand to be fair iv always opted for the fluval but beens there similar in price I’d expect the same quality and I always just use the flow control when cleaning the filter and it’s never leaked on me. I have just uncliped the pipes before but I struggle to clip them back on ... I didn’t even think about it draining my tank either ahahah I’m guessing there must be some sort of auto lock once unclipped . My only suggestion is depending on how nice your floor is and how’s much your wife will moan is just try it ahahah

Lol I could just belt and brace it and turn the taps off and twist the pipes out. In fact if I do that I'll know whats going on as worst case scenario there is the pipes will drain, I use big builders buckets for water changes so I can put it in one of them while I'm faffing around.

Just can't believe no one has done a video of it as most Oase stuff has great content but even the official channel does not show it hooked up to a tank just on a desk.

I know where you are coming from on the Fluval comparison but I actually think Oase are better, by quite some distance IMO. I hated my FX5s and 6s for cleaning, never worked out how to deal with that bit of water you get between the twist of the clips and the top of the canister. I suspect the answer is the little tap at the bottom but very annoying! Would still get an FX6 over a Biomaster 850 though, purely for the power vs £.

Iv honestly never used that little tap thing I tend to just wrap a towel around it as I undone the little clips because your right they are a terrible design really especially for the Germans . there kinds of heavy full of water so I always spill a little anyway dragging it out .
I liked my fx4 so I went to the fx6 but iv never used any other brand to compare them . I get what you mean about the bucket but I’m the same as you surely they don’t make them knowing you have to spill or put them in a bucket there has to be a better way

I think the intention is for you to use the drain pipe, connect a hose so it goes outside and you can actually use the filter to empty the tank and the filter gets a flush at the same time. But if you did it with the taps shut you would be able to just drain the filter which would make it easier to unclip and better to move around. I have heard its tricky if you get sand in the drain tap though as it can damage the seal.

Just for completion here :) If you twist the pipe connection section it does locks the water in the pipes so you can remove the canister and do what you need to do - which is fantastic and easy!

Just tried it but had a bucket ready lol as I was doing it it just felt like it must be safe as there is no other way to do it. It’s a bit like my bio master which has a switch to do the same thing but this is just a simpler way for the smaller unit
