I wouldn't consider the JD, texas or convict to fall into any particular "group". Salvini I mentioned in the exCichlasoma group

I have heard of JDs being called Nandopis octofasciatum and salvinis as Nandopis salvini. Does this mean these two are in the same group or are these classifications invalid?

those are old classifications...at least according to the Cichlid Room Companion which is the site of Juan Miguel Artigas Azaz. According to his site, the dempsey has been re-classified as Archocentrus octofasciatum and the salvini is listed as exCichlasoma salvini because it is still under debate and awaiting re-classification. :)
