So I have one of those blasted tropiquarium 68 tanks, where everything is built in. Sure it's "convenient" but no modding is possible. (it was a gift, I wouldn't have got it on my own strength)

Anywho, it comes with a built in bioLife filtering system.

And Hagen discontinued the filter inserts!!!! Guy at the LFS said that people have been making filters at home, but they don't work as well.

What should I do? I'm in need of filtering badly right now.

And yes, Hagen got an angry customer email.

Whats the "filter insert"? Is it just a sponge?

There's not really any need to run carbon in a tank unless removing something deliberately like meds, so why not just buy another spong, cut it to size and whack that it? It might in fact be cheaper to do that, especially if you use the sponges intended for giant pond filters.

When you take it out, are you removing all of your filter media and tossing it away?

I have a Tropiquarium 68 and I modded the whole thing completely. Filter is gone (it took up like a 3rd of the tank :X ) and now running external Eheim 2213. Ripped the whole inner hood apart and fitted my own lights. 3 x 18W instead of 2 x 15W :good:

If you need help on how, let me know - easily done :)

Btw. I would never choose to buy such an all-on-one tank - I got it for for next to nothing second hand on eBay.

thanks for all the responses. To answer some things in no particular order:

I will probably for now at least buy a sponge and cut it to fit. I think the only problem would be finding one to fit length-wise as it's a long and skinny sponge.

If not, I'll mod the tank... Bloo, you can PM me on this, but I think the first topic of work would be how to get the hood off!

And as for the filter media.... I never really know what I am to do with it... So help me now!

Thanks!
