im starting a planted tank and ive just found out that i can’t add salt to it. *shucks* :X
my problem is that i usually always add salt to my betta’s tanks as a preventative.
what can i add to their new homes that will work to protect my bettas but not harm my plants?
i’m also wondering if i should slowly decrease the amounts of salt i use as not to shock them when they enter an un-salted environment.
thanks in advance for any input. :)

my guppy tank is all planted up and b4 i got catfish i had a teaspoon of salt in there after every 50% water change and it didn't bother the plants a bit.

~by the way my guppy tank is a 10g

I've also used salt in my planted tanks (10, 20 and 55 US gallons) and never had a problem? Where did you hear this? just curious

i think, in general, and this is speaking from my own experience, that salt does not harm aquarium plants. although i have read about a couple plants that do not due well with salt. i say try it out and if the plants seem to be doing poorly, then do a water change but don't add any more salt. that way your bettas would gradually get used to the conditions too.

okey sweet - thanks for the responses :D
i will continue to use some salt in my tanks and just monitor my plants.
i was talking to some folks at the pet store today and they told me you shouldnt use salt in planted tanks or with ottos or plecos.

out of interest how much salt do you folks use? i currently use 1/2 tsp per gal and the tanks im setting up will be 15 gal each.
guppy dude are you suggesting approx 1 tsp per 5 gal?

That is correct on the otos and plecos. Plants should be fine tho!
