Hi all,

The quick question is if a 0.25 reading is toxic for the fish?

I have a 6x2x2 (650L) and recently my friend had accidently overfed the fish while I was away for a day.

I came back to find some of the uneaten food decomposing on the gravel, and knew it was not a good sign. I measured Ammonia and got a 0 reading but forgot to test Nitrite/Nitrate. I immediately did a 30% water change + gravel vacuum as there were heaps of waste.

24 hours later, I did another 30% water change and this time tested the tank for all parameters,

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0.25
Nitrate 40

I added Seachem Stability and triple dosed with Prime, I plan to do a larger water change (50%) tomorrow and see how it goes.

Thanks

Carry on with water changes and increase aeration.
I could maybe not feed for a few days seen as the friend over fed them.

Thanks Wilder.

I have stopped feeding since I spotted the waste.

I added an airstone for extra aeration for the meantime, but will the 0.25ppm Nitrite reading in the meantime be deadly for the fish?

How long does it usually take to reduce it to 0, in a mature tank?

Its not really high but then again it not low.
It shouldn't take that long to get the reading back to 0.
If you increased aeration thats good as fish find it hard to breath in bad water quality.

Thanks for the reply.

I did another 45% water change today and checked the Nitrite level a few hours later, it had dropped from 0.25 to 0.12 - is this a good sign? I did however double/triple dosed Prime when adding the new tap water.

Should I do another 45% water change tomorrow? I have not fed the fish.

Its coming down so that good.
Maybe just do another water change later in the day.
If the fish look stressed do a water change straight away.
