Hello my nitrite level is reading 1 after it was 0.25 yesterday. It was as high as 5 last week but I was told to do water changes and add Nite-out everyday.

I was also told do not change water everyday as tank is only 3-4 weeks old and needs to cycle and water changes alone does not solve the high nitrite reading.

So what should I do change water or leave it.

Thanks for any help

Hi,

Definitely do water changes. Whoever told you that your tank won't cycle if you do water changes is ill-informed. One of our mods, Bignose, is very good on all the science side of the hobby, and wrote an article a while back showing how water changes will actually speed up a cycle, not slow it down.

Nitrite is very dangerous for fish, lethal in fact, so you need to get it out the tank as much as possible. The best way to do this is with water changes. Start with a 75% water change, then continue with a 50% change at least every day, more if necessary. Keep going with this until your nitrite disappears.

It will also help if you can let us know the ammonia reading for your tank, the pH reading, and what fish you have.

Cheers

BTT :good:

Thank you for the advice my ammonia is reading 0.0 and the ph is 7.7
