Has anybody seen the five pages on Archerfish in PFK by Neal ?

Lovely article and great pictures.

P.S Must say I still can't tell what species my Archer is.

Sabby,

Thanks for this! Must admit, I haven't seen it yet...

Try and get some more pictures of your archers, with at least one focusing on the area between the gills and the pectoral and pelvic fins. This bit seems the best place for seeing if the scales are small (T. microlepis) or big (T. jaculatrix). Also the dorsal fin is usually a good place to look, too. T. microlepis should have two spots (sometimes they merge) but they are always separate from the dark patch close to the base of the tail.

Cheers,

Neale

Hi Again

The problem is that I need to identify my Archer as I would like to put him into my big tank. Salinity about 1.010. Can anybody tell from these two pictures?

I am 99% sure that fish is T. jaculatrix.

It obviously isn't T. chatareus. T. microlepis and T. jaculatrix are the similar ones.

T. microlepis:

-- 2 spots on the dorsal fin that don't merge with the black bands on the flanks
-- little spots between some of the black bands on the flanks

T. jaculatrix

-- 2 black bands on the flanks run up and onto the dorsal fin
-- no spots between the black bands

Hence, you probably have T. jaculatrix. He'll do well at 1.010.

Cheers,

Neale
