just set up my new tank rinsed the sand and got it filled up and running....is there anything i should do or just leave it to cycle?

Depends what you mean by 'just leave it to cycle'. Have you added anything to it yet...ammonia-wise?

Welcome to the forums! :D

:hi: You read the cycling section on this site in the beginners resource section?

Hello and welcome to TFF,
Please have a look at the links in my signature(bottom of this post).

Skins.

my lfs told me all i would need to cycle is "nutrafin cycle:biological aquarium supplement"

Then I suggest you take all future advice from that shop with a pinch of salt as that's absolute rubbish.

Skins is right, you need to have a look at the cycling info we have here on the site. The links can be found in my signature aswell.

There are also lots of other useful articles in the beginners resource centre on all different aspects of fish keeping.

All tanks need to be cycled. If you put fish into them then they will cycle naturally, but the fish will then be exposed to toxins. See the cycling links for info. Even if you did choose to use fish to cycle it (which will be harder on the fish and you), then you still need to understand how the nitrogen cycle works and you need to know how to do a cycle to keep your fish alive.

There is also a fishless cycling method (again see the links in my sig), where you can get your tank ready for fish without exposing them to toxins.

Also, just incase you don't know. Goldfish get quite larger and are meant to live 12-20 years or so.
Fancy goldfish are recommended to be given 20gal for the first fish and 10gal there after. So for example 2 fully grown fancy goldfish need a 120l tank realistically.

I wish things were different, but your local fish shop has misled you so that they can sell you lots of fish. The reality of things is that any tank must be cycled before it will support any new fish, regardless of the species. Goldfish are considered by many people, especially LFS, as disposable fish. That means that they will encourage you to place them into uncycled tanks with a hope / wish that they will survive such abuse. As it turns out, a new filter is nothing but so much hardware. Some day it may become a biological filter if you take the effort to cycle it properly. You have the option of conducting a fish-in cycle or a fishless cycle on your new filter. I prefer a fishless cycle because it can be successfully conducted with far less work than a fish-in cycle. A fishless cycle merely requires that you check your tank chemistry every few days and add ammonia daily or as indicated by your testing. A fish-in cycle requires at least daily chemical testing and huge water changes as needed to maintain your water chemistry safe for the fish in the tank. Most p[eople will find daily water changes of over 50% of the water as excessive and will not do it as often as it will take for the fish to survive in good health.
