I think that i am going to get a 30 gallon aquarium for christmas. I have looked everywhere on the internet and read what i can on the supplies, what you need, and so on to keep a successful small reef. The first question that i would like to ask is, How big of a sump do you need for a 30 gallon tank? Is a 10gallon sump enough?
How much live rock should i have in a 30gallon?
How much sand and how thick of a sand bed?
How many powerheads, how large, and where to position them in the tank?

I'm new to saltwater so please don't think of these q's as stupid.
Thanks.

:hi:....way to go. You don't really need a sump for a 30 gallon BUT...it WOULD be great to have. It adds extra volume and can be the location for your equipment and a refugium. All your questions should be answered..for the most part..in the FAQ section under nano and marine. Start reading there and write down any specific questions for us. The LR and sand questions are answered there. Welcome aboard. SH

As the most general answer I can think up...

10gal sump would be great, I'd do 35-40lbs of LR, I'd do a 1-1.5" live sand bed, I'd do two power heads, one to the back right and one to the middle left. That should create a nice little circle flow around the tank. These are vague answers. It all really depends on what you want to do and what you want to keep.
