i am looking at getting a 48''x18''x18'' tank and i want to run a sump tank ,so all you see in the tank is the reef and fish but i am not sure what size rhe sump tank should be can anyone help.

well Jayker, there is a whole marine section, so just PM a mod to move this thread and this question will get much more attention there.

But I can help ya while I'm here. The sump can actually a whole range of sizes, just depends on what you want to get out of the sump. If you will have an internal skimmer, then you need room for that, if you want a large refugium for macroalgae or a DSB, then you would need mroe room for that, and if you want to put in an area for any mechanical filtration, such as filter floss or filter socks, then you will need room for them as well.

Basically, all depends on what your looking for out of the sump. I've seen 20G displays with 75G sumps, basically just to increase the water volume to make the small display more stable. I've also seen 280G tanks with 40G sumps... though they were not the classic idea of a sump, but its purpose was generally a sump. But usually, the sump will be about 1/2 to 2/3 the size of the display. This will give ample room for a skimmer, a refugium and just an extra large container to increase system volume to make things more stable.
