This past week I gave away most of my fish in my 45 gal. high as i was gonna switch it over to a cichlid tank. But today i was given a 55 gal. Which im gonna make into a ciclid tank instead. So I'm now stuck with an empty 45 gal. Well it has a spotted rapheal and a sailfin pleco in it. Im gonna transfer the sailfin over to the 55 since it gets a descent size. What do you guys think I should do with my 45? I was thinking maybe a south american setup. With a big piece of driftwood in the middle (since i have a high tank) And get that tea color water and put some plants in there and house some angels and other SA fish. Then i was thinking of like an oddball tank. Im debating all I know as of know is that I wanna use sand instead of gravel.

I like the idea of a s.american setup...with a tall tank, some angelfish would go well in there.....get some bristlenose plecs (they do a wonderful job of cleaning algae away)...just no small tetras as if your angels get hungry they might become food (the tetras thsat is)

Yout options are endless

Let us know what you decide and please post pics

im personally not an angelfish fan so i'd say go with oddball.

orange pikes, dwarf or dragon puffers, butterflyfish, koohli loaches are some of my favs!

I just added angels to my 46gal and couldn't be happier  The cories are a great addition and maybe at some point down the road, I'd do rams or other SAs to go with the angels and cories instead of the rainbowfish, but I'm really pleased with how my tank is set up right now. The specifics are in my siggy :)

I do like angels espeacially the altums but i personally would go with an oddball tank.
My personal prefernce in your situation would definitely be to get an oscar as they are by far my favourute fish! As they have there own characters look good if you look beyond there grumpy looking face (LOL) and are a wicked pet! :D

An oscar won't fit in a 45 gallon.

A 45 gallon tank is the minimum size tank for a single oscar
The 55g would be a better suggestion for one but 45g is adequate to house 1!

Even cichlid specialists like Mary Bailey say that the bare minimum for a large oscar is a 36" x 18" x 12" tank which works out at roughly 30g!
I personally wouldnt suggest doing this but these are words from a specialist!

Just because a specialist says it doesn't mean it's true. You may be able to physically keep and Oscar in a 30 gallon tank, but it sure won't be happy in there. Oscars need adequate room to move around and get exercise, and the minimum for this for a full grown oscar is 70-75 gallons. After you have reached this bare minimum, you can add another oscar for every 15-20 gallons you go over. (70 gallons: 1 oscar, 85 gallons: 2 oscars, 100 gallons: 3 oscars...) Well, you get the picture. Sure, you can keep young oscars when they are 4-6 inches long in a 30, but as they grow you will have to upgrade in tank size.

Well we'll have to agree to disagree! I dont suggest doing what mary bailey says as i dnt agree with a 30g tank being adequate, however a 45g tank at roughly 48"x18"x15" i would say is a bare minimum size for an oscar but like i said would suggest 55g as better option.
Any way every1 has there opinions :D
