Okay....i am purchasing a new 3 foot tank soon and planning to put some tropical fish in it, could anyone give me some advice of what middle size fish i can put in this tank and how many, i would like a variety for example maybe 3,4,5 of each and interestign colours would be nice, what i mean by middle size is not guppies or tetras, dwarf gourami sizes.... any help and a list of what i could have and how many would be brilliant people :) thankyou!

Hmm... stocking depends on more than just the fact it's 3ft long. Sorry! lol.

Full tank dimensions would be useful.
Colours you like would be helpful.
What substrate will you be using? Sand... very fine gravel... big gravel... smooth gravel... rough gravel etc

Would you like a 'balanced' looking tank? Ie. bottom feeders, a few large fish and lots of little midwater fish (aka. dithers). Dithers are useful as they tend to make the larger fish feel alot more comfortable and safe.

Or would you like to mainly have big fish?

obviously though how big your tank is decides how many fish you can have in it! as i stated middle sized fish the same as dwarf sized gourami!, the dimmensions are 3 foot by 1 foot by 1 foot, i will be using sand, and as i said colourful fish :)

a lot of little fish also with several larger fish sounds good to

Yes the size does depict how many fish... but you only gave one dimension which isn't really useful. A 3ft long tank can range anywhere from 80-200l.

I know you said larger fish, but have you considered a 'balanced' tank, or do you just want a mixture of larger fish?

Ie. If I suggested
2 dwarf gouramis (1m 1f)
10 Tetra/rasbora
8 Corys/kuhli loach

What would you think? Or would you prefer just 'larger' fish...

Ie.
2 Dwarf gouramis (1m 1f)
3 Apistogramma cacatuoides (1m 2f)
1 African butterfly fish
2 Bristlenose plecos

oh i see sorry :),
i think id prefer just larger fish,
i have come up with a few fish id like but im not to sure about it being balanced...
3 german rams
3 dwarf gourami
3 siamese fighting fish
and 1 black knife fish
would that be okay? if not could you specify where i am unbalancing this fishy equation :D sorry for being a pain

German rams are best kept at 28-30c which isn't compatible with your other choices.

Dwarf gouramis are very territorial, males moreso than females. But you might struggle to keep the peace with 3 in a 3fter. However with plenty of plant cover it's certainly worth a go, you just need to be aware of it.

The only bettas (siamese fighting fish) you can keep together are females. And they would need to be in a slightly larger group than 3, 4-5 would be better. It allows them to build up a pecking order.

Thing is gouramis and bettas come from the same family of fish, anabantoids, they occupy the same level of the tank as eachother and are very territorial between eachother. Unlike with risking the gouramis, I would not risk mixing bettas with gouramis as they are practically always a nightmare. However again it would be up to you, so long as you're aware of the possible problems and will be ready to seperate them all if neccesary then you should be fine.

As for the black knife fish, sadly no. They grow far too big for your tank.

alright :), thanks for the information ill have a think about things and work somethign out!

sounds a similar size to my tank (have a look in the 'members tanks' section for some pics) - i ended up getting mainly barbs which (if you are unfamiliar with them) are usually a bit bigger than tetra, but still quite small. these guys then need to be in groups of preferably 6+ per species so you could have maybe 2 lots of 6, a couple of centre piece fish and a couple of bottom feeders? do you know the volume of your tank (im too lazy to work it out...) im guessing its about 100L?
