I would like some advice. I've had my Juwel Rio 240 for 5-6 years. Its been running fine, a few deaths etc but now this week I have had a major disaster I've lost the whole lot to whitespot. It either came in on some plants (they were washed) or the temperature dropped too much, anyway I'm now left with an empty tank. I don't know what to do, whether to give up and sell the tank, or to start again with a different species (it was a community tank.)O/H was suggesting Cichlids, are they very difficult? what water do they like? and the big question when can I restock safely after the whitespot. Thanks for any advice.

Ich (whitepot) needs a host to survive, so if you ramp the temp up to 30C and carry on feeding the empty tank for a week (to keep your good bacteria fed) that should be enough time to clear the ich parasite from your tank and after a waterchange and the temp reset, leave the tank suitable for restocking.

Cichlids are quite a diverse bunch, many like different parameters, I'm guessing that since you had community then it would be some major changes needed to adapt the tank so it was suitable for any of the rift lake cichlids, but some South American or African river cichlids are also suitable for a community setup so maybe have a look into those fish?
