new platy female

i had a pair of platies. i bought another female, yet i'm not sure the male took to her. he chased her around a lot and it looked like he was trying to protect his other girlfriend. anyways, while i was on vacation my ORIGINAL female platy died now that his original mate is gone, he continues to chase around the new female. is he just being aggressive? or has he been courting her the whole time?
