I brought some live plants for my tank today thought i would give the live plants ago instead. I just put them in my tank and noticed the tips of some of leafs are black does this mean the plant is dead ?

no, do you have pics of the plants? and i can give more advice on the care for them

If you could post a pic or even tell us what plants you are referring to it would help us to advise.  It is likely the whole plant is not dead, but probably part of it.  Thats not the end of the world though, and certain plants go through a degree of "die back" or "melt".  But if you can let us know what plants you have and some details about your lights, substrate, whether you add CO2 and in what format, and whether you use plant ferts, that would be great.

there amazon swords, they do melt but just leave them trimming old leaves, there a fairly easy plant to grow, the reason that ones got black ends is because its melting, its changing from its emersed form to its submerged from (as the plant has to deal with different water levels in the wild)

so its nothing to worry about which is good and would the plant be ok with no tank light till my new hood comes this week ?

ummm, it would need some light, maybe just put a desk lamp pointing at the tank? that should do it, there fairly undemanding plants

i do that till my hood comes then and for plant food what should i use ? sorry all the questions

just put a root tab under it, what lights you got on the hood?

you'll be fine, if it starts getting holes in the new leaves have a look into co2 and ferts

i keep a eye on them

 for your help

Yep, definitely Amazon Sword.  Relatively easy to grow.  Your light will be fine, left on for about 6 or 7 hours no more. Root tabs by each one will help.  Shouldn't need CO2 hopefully, and I would consider adding a fert like Seachem Flourish as per instructions as it will help too.  Cut the leaves that are damage off right down at the base.  Its actually preferable to remove the stem by "peeling" it away from the plant at the base, but once planted this is not always possible.

by the looks of it my fish think the plants are food my pleco is on one of the plants and has holes in it
