I'm not sure how to link it so I will try all my options sorry this forum is so different than the ones i use!
They were given to me as "rainbow fish" and at least 1/2 is very aggressive.. He is very territorial with the other "rainbow fish" and pecks at him til he hides away somewhere. He isn't noticeably aggressive with the smaller fish (mollies, guppies, and two American flags)
However, we have sadly had three casualties already and it's been a week!
( R.I.P. guppies and sir Pleco ) now on sir Pleco you can see the nibbles! So sad, what did he ever do to anyone?! Apparently I was misinformed and while I've decided to separate i just got the "jail" tank set up, so I will separate the mean one and I guess he will live a lonely life, we will see if the other guy is just as mean and I still have unsolved homicides, then I guess I will have a problem because I only have one time out tank.....

It's quite a poor photo, but you've got two different species there that I can see.

Down the bottom is what looks to me like a Dwarf Gourami. If you have multiple males, they can and will fight each other, so that tallies up with what you are saying.

You also appear to have tiger barbs - the ones with 2 or 3 vertical black stripes towards the top of the tank. These are the more likely culprits for pecking at the plec and the other casualties. They are notorious for it when kept in small numbers.

Do you know what species of plec it is?

Do you know about cycling the filter and have you done so (and if so, how)?

I had a juvenile paradise fish down for that one, but it isn't an ideal photo for ID'ing.

It would explain the behaviour as well, they're really designed to be kept on their own. Lovely fish and I remember keeping them in metal framed tanks on wrought iron stands full of plants and no heater, but not community fish at all.

I agree.  Assuming these fish were recently acquired, I would return them (Paradise and Tiger Barbs) to the store if possible.  The tank size is not indicated, nor the numbers of Tiger Barb, but as has been mentioned this fish can be quite nasty if not kept in a decent sized group (some suggest 8 but most agree 10+) in a good sized tank since there are other fish too.  On their own, a 30g tank is minimum.

Byron.

Yes acquired from a private owned fish store who apparently doesn't label their fish right, or properly educate their customers.. Though I guess that is a smart little trick.

I did a two week cycle and made sure the ph stayed level, also have live plants in there and a 40 gallon filter

I would guess that you mean you just ran the tank empty for two weeks - that isn't cycling.

You need to be testing for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate every day, and taking corrective action when the levels get too high. Read this and then read this

when cycling you shpuld be checking the ammonia and nitrite levels however they will often correct themselfs after a spike in turn. mine did this when i got my new tank. those top fish are defdinately tiger barbs. aggro fish very nippy you need 8plus to manage them. the bottom fish id say is definately a paradise fish. i have no experience keeping them so i dont know its temperament. it looks nothing like a dwarf gourami i have to say.

Yes they're tiger barbs and they seem to be Iike jerks at feeding time, but ever since I removed the more aggressive paradise fish, (that is exactly what it is) everyone has been doing just fine. I'd have gotten better photos... If it were possible hah I will continue trying.

Next time I will cycle it longer, but I'm guessing I am a little late now, and everything is remaining stable. Thank you all for your help.
