Ok so I have a 5.5 gallon tank with a heater. It does have a live plant in it. Lately I have been getting really funky readings on my water test. The tank has cycled through and I have been doing regular water changes. My pH level has been dropping low for some reason and Nitrates have been spiking really high. My nitrites have always tested low. Most of the times it is at 0 ppm, sometimes it is at 0.25ppm. My ammonia levels have been at zero. Occasionally it gets fo 0.50.( Normally this is right before a water change). So I switching my filter out as recommended by the water filter company. My question is will it be ok to leave both in there together or will it ruin my pump? I am trying to let my new filter catch the good bacteria from my old one. I plan on leaving them together for a week or two before I toss put the old filter.
Note: I have tried rinsing out my old filter in old aquarium water it helped a little but I think I just need a new carbon filter.
