Hi, although I'm not a newbie fish keeper myself, this is my first Betta tan so just wanna check I'm doing it right...

My little boy wants a tank in the living room, although the space is limited.  I already have a Baby Biorb (I know, not the greatest tank that ever was...) but I thought i could use that as our new Betta tank?

I've set it up in the corner, close(ish) to a heat source that is regulated, however I've only used that tank for coldwater previously.. and I'm new to cycling because all my other fish have been inherited into old mature tanks...  so here are my questions...

1. Is there a small, decent value, heater available that is aesthetically ok, as well as being smooth enough not to damage his fins?

2. Is there a specific concentration of ammonia that I have to buy (I know that it'll be diluted) or can I used lab grade ammonia (I have access to this in my chemistry lab at work) and just use a dropper?  And then check the levels every day.. I'm reading a lot about this, don't wanna kill him off!

3. Just checking that plastic plants are bad, so I should buy silk ones?  and some indian almond leaves??

4. If I put live plants in there are they just gonna muck up my water chemistry and dirty the tank due to the size, although I know Bettas prefer real to fake...

5. Do you think the tank is large enough to pop a couple of tetra in there too?  If so, which breeds are least likely to have a nibble?

6. Anything else you think I've forgotten?

thanks in advance x

I wouldn't reccomend a baby biorb for a betta. It's got limited surface area and it's pretty tiny.
Make it a shrimp tank. Are you planning on cycleing this tank?

No fish can live well in a biorb baby.

I started fishless cycling yesterday and I'm not in any crazy rush to stock it so I'm happy to wait till it's fully cycled. I'm not concerned about the time it'll take to cycle.

The Betta forums I was reading on here were saying for a single male betta, a 15L tank is ok.  I know not ideal but I don't have unlimited tank funds or I'd have converted my spare bedrooms into a 20,000G marine tank....   My friend has a single male betta in her 15L tank, with a couple of shrimp and snails, as well as real plants and he seems happy...  He bubble nests regularly and flares when she goes to feed him....

This is confusing as you have 2 threads going on the same subject missd - I've replied to the other one but maybe that thread ought to be deleted.

The size is fine in a regular tank. Not with the biorbs design though. The biorb media will tear up betta fins for sure. Due to the lack of surface area, a baby biorb is only worth around 8 liters of water IMO.
