Could anybody please tell me what the approx length of a 2 day old swordtail, as today while doin a water change i noticed a single baby fish swimming around the tank, i have only had my swordtail's since sunday, 1 male and 2 female, although none of my females looked pregnant at the time. And if it was in the bag when i brought them home i doubt if it would have lasted with 3 adults. The only other possible explanation is, up until last weekend one of my leopard danios was very fat, and suddenly over night became slim, although i did not notice any eggs anywhere in the tank. I work in a pet shop but have nothing to put him into an keep him warm until tomorrow, as i have only had fish in the tank for the last 2 weeks i have not yet bought a small tank for emergencies.
Thanks in advance
Ced

Update: i now know it is a baby swordtail, and now hav it in a breeding trap

well you need to feed it atleast small flakes otherwise s/he gets devoured by another fish, how large is he | | <-- that long? ive got a cuple fry froma swordtail comming myself

at the moment i'd say s/he is about 5mm in length, i hav him/her in a breeding net trap so s/he is on itsown in their, i hav been feeding it on crushed up flakes but a larger piece fell in and it seemed quite happy nibbleing on that, but i might pick up some liquifry while im in work tomorrow.
Good luck with your little ones drango91 :good:

Try getting some solid fry food....Liquifry can be hard to feed sometimes, and solid works just as well. Also, when it gets bigger and you go back to flakes, alternate in some high protein foods (frozen, live, or freeze-dried) and some veggies. Most any veggie is good. It's a good idea to blanch or steam the veggie, to soften it up for them. Is you choose peas, they need to be shelled.

Also, you can only keep the little one in the breeder trap for 2 weeks max. After that, you run the risk of stunting. Good luck, and congratulations! :)

Thank for the advice Annastasia at the moment im feeding it on flakes that i hav crumbled up very fine. And iv got some freeze dried bloodworm that i feed the adults and the other fish in my tank so i'll try some of that once it gets a bit bigger. I was originally goin to leave it in the tank with the others as it was quite happy and finding it no problem to escape from the adults, but then decided against that as i have 2 very active bumble bee catfish who might have swallowed it. Thanx again for the advice :D
