Hi all,

last thursday I returned all my guppies to the shop as I couldnt keep up with the amount of fry and whilst there I decided on a single platinum angel fish.

He is swimming around, happy as larry and looks well but I am not sure if he is eating.

When I had my guppies i would feed flakes, tetra fresh blood worm (in a floating bucket fish feeder) and cucumber (also for my BN plec) and the guppies would go mad, eating everything.

With the angel I never see him eat. I have tried the frozen, tetra fresh and freeze dried blood worm both in the basket and just in the tank. I have tried flakes, tetra prima, tetra prima mini granules and just put in a block of tetra natura cyclops and no feeding frenzy. I also added a very small pinch of prima mini granules and they are still on the surface. I have never had a tank where food lasted so long!!

With the flakes and the tetra prima mini granules I have seen him eat one, chew, spit out and then eat the "spit out".

I am guessing he is roughly the size of a quarter dollar coin in body.

any assistance would be brilliant.

water params etc are spot on, temp is 78.3 and the other fish are 5 neons and a BN plec. Tank is gravel and planted.

thank you.

What size tank is the angel in? When you say the water params are spot on, what exactly are your readings?

Any readings over 0 for ammonia and nitrites will stress the angel out. This is one reason as to why he/she may not be eating. Or it may simply be that he is in a new environment and needs to settle in. Iv had more than one fish that have taken up to 5 days to settle in and start to take food.

Angel fish like to school maybe if you add two more it will come around. How bout hiding places? Kind of a big deal if it doesnt feel safe, ive had new fish hide out for a few days till they felt safe enough to come out much less eat. Angel fish are pretty vulnerable species the best angel tanks are usually made up of only angels for that reason in my own opinion of course.

Angels should be kept on their own, as a breeding pair or as a group of 6 or more.

What size is the angel?

The OP has stated that the angels body is around the size of a quarter dollar coin :good:

You are also right in saying they are better kept single, breeding pair of larger group :) I know of loads of people who have had them as 3's or 4's and have had constant trouble with bullying between them. I'd stick with a single

an angel not eating after several days and also being 'shy' could be indicators of an internal parasite.

Have you seen any faeces hanging from the fish? What colour is it? If it's string and translucent, that's another sign of internal parasites.

I speak from experience here as I have been through this myself and if caught early, it can be successfully treated.......if parasites are indeed the issue.

Ive found large angels take a few days to settle. Younger ones usualy settle in very fast.

+1 on internal parasites.

Thanks for the replies, nitrates and ammonia are nil, he is swimming around and not hiding but there is a lot of hiding spots in the tall plants.

He is in a 30g, now 4 neons as it looks like he took a chunk from one today at some point.

I have noticed white almost see through poop and a fair bit of it but not hanging.

Need to look up internal parasites and best way to deal with it.
