I disagree that is not the best method. That's all. Every other thing you said I agree with.

They get to be 6-8" .
quite big then suppose its new tank time then 25gallons no way big enough
 
A 40 gal or bigger would be best. A 25 gal would be ok to grow them out in for a little bit but once they start to grow you will need a larger tank.
 
seen a 400ltr for £250 but it comes with 4 discus a bristlenose plec 2 clown loaches and some tetras the fish are probs worth over £100+

yeah i see that its head is square what size are yours mine are only small still i was told that it will be easier to tell when there bigger i think there the same sex though as they never swim anywhere near each other or have any interest at all so possible 2 males only time will tell i suppose

yay just bought a new 75 uk gallon tank off ebay that should be big enough for my blue acara and it was a bargain at £50 well happy now :D
 
He is about 3" in that photo.

Congrats on the new tank they will be happy in that .
