I have nearly finished setting up my new Tank, all i need to do is put the backing on, put in my bogwood when it arrives & fix the lightbar.

The external filter is the mutts nuts & has sponge, floss, bio rings & some old media that I thought i would add for the hell of it. I started the filter about an hour ago (after treating the water). Thanks to Biffster for all the help & answering some of my daft questions about this.

I looked on the Ammonia calculator on this site & it recomended 9.47ml to bring it up to 5ppm. So have just bunged that in, gona have a bath now the run my first tests in about an hour.

ooooo, im excited.

It's great having a new tank to start up. Good luck with the cycle.

The old media is probably the most important thing in your filter Tom. It will be the source of bacteria to seed the rest of your filter.

sorry if im being lazy and not re-reading your old posts, but what external have you got on this tank?

Make sure to put up some pics throughout the process!

if you haven't already, try to place the old media in the top container/basket. This will help seed the newer media more quickly due to the water flowing over any established bacteria first and hopefully depositing some on th new media as it flows out of the filter.

Aha, the old filter media is in the middle somewhere, hard to be sure as it has so many baskets in it. Will trot off to look & change it now.

Some fine filter pads arrived today so one of them has gone in as well.

Righto sorted the trays in the filter.

Now it has

Top Tray --- Old Filter Media + bag of bio rings.

Second Down --- Course Sponge then Fine Sponge

Third Down --- Filter Wool

Bottom --- Three Bags of Bio Rings

Comon bacteria, lets get this party started :hey:

I have just tested the water & it is 2.4ppm ammonia, I am sure I dosed it right last night, will check again in the morning & if it is still the same I will top it up.

Weird.

Lets hope your mature media was hungry :good:

Skins.
