How come neons take about half an hour to brighten up (phsically ) after the light goes on?

i havent even noticed. I would check but im 4 hours away from all my fishies until tuesday

Some fish have quite powerful annular muscles on their pigment cells and can change colur quickly, others weaker muscles that take longer. Things like Neons do not need strong muscles in their pigment cells as they do not use rapid colour change for advantage. In the wild of course, the daylight increases gradually - there are no "lights".
