Hi all, so I recently set up a 5 gallon fish tank. I left the tank running for 48 hours before putting any fish inside. There are 3 rocks and 1 limestone looking structure in the tank. I used water conditioner to remove any chlorine inside the water. About 2 days ago I bought a Male Guppy.
It seemed healthy when I bought it from Petco and was adjusting to the tank. Yesterday I found that the left fin stopped moving. This morning I found that he had passed away and was stuck to the filter. What am I doing wrong here? I also tested the water on 5/15 with the following results...Ammonia: .5ppm, Nitrite: 0ppm, Nitrate 0ppm. I tested the water today with the same results.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am sorry about that. :( Before you add any fish you need to cycle your tank. Please read here :fishless cycling

Absolutely agree.

upsy_daisy is absolutely right! Fishless Cycling is one of the core things to learn about as a new hobbyist. In many ways it has transformed the hobby and allowed people to build healthy environments for fish prior to introducing them, leading to much more reliable results for these delicate creatures!

The thoughtful Fishless Cycling article by RDD that has been linked above is found inside a list we call the Beginners Resource Center. The next article to read, in my opinion, is the Nitrogen Cycle article, which should help give some understanding of the reason behind the cycling you will have read about. There are articles also by Miss Wiggle and other good ones in there. Be sure to give your thoughts here on the forum as the members enjoy hearing from each individual and discussing things!
