I'm new to this

Reason for unknown water quality is.. i dont have a test kit
water was tested yesterday the guy at the shop said all was ok but not sure if he said it was nitrites or nitrates that were a little high, he did say the reason was most likely over feeding and to do a 1/4 water change which i did

Tank size: 35Ltrs
pH:?
ammonia:?
nitrite:?
nitrate:?
kH:?
gH:?
tank temp:25c

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): To put it simply my tiger barb is doing barrel rolls, loops and gasping for air. Also think the gills are red

Volume and Frequency of water changes: 25% at least weekly sometimes smaller amounts if sand looks a littl dirty

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank:filt has sponge and a cannister of activated carbon which i've been told needs replacing with a new 1

Tank inhabitants: 1 albino plec unaffected i've been told their pretty tough

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): the fish in question

Exposure to chemicals: none

Digital photo (include if possible):

Ok i'll tell the full story as there may be some relavance that i'm unaware of.
the tank was my sisters which she neglected and then left behind when she moved out, it was left with no heater, a filter that was barely running, only half full of very dirty water and black and green crap covering everything with two poor little guppys in there. I decided to give fish keeping a go and purchashed a heater a bucket and some aqua plus water conditioner. So i followed the instructions filled the bucket with warmish water stuck the heater in the bucket removed the filter from the tank and gave the sponge a bit of a rinse to get the thick slime off and stuck the filter in the bucket too figureing the good bacteria would go with it, anyway after leaving that about half an hour i placed the 2 guppys in the bucket and went about cleaning the tank along with rocks that were in it with a scouring pad and warm water. once finished i added sand and everything from the bucket along with the fish after 2 weeks they were still alive and swimming happily so i took a water sample to my lfs and they couldnt believe that water was more or less spot on and advised a plec. A week later and everything is still fine apart from one of the guppys looked a little plump but read that they can bread like crazy so assumed i had a male and female. My girlfriend then suprised me with a fighter which for a begginer the shop shouldnt have sold her but i didn't know that at the time. The fighter lasted 24 hours so i read up on them and put it possibly down to my error but who knows, a couple of days later the other guppy starts to get plump and then that night started doing the barrel roll floating and gasping thing and then its spine bent a little the next morning had died followed by the other 1 within 24hours with the same simptoms. My plec is still fine and happy and loves the odd chunk of cucumber now and again, 2 days ago my girlfriend suprised me again with 2 young tiger barbs and a young red finned black shark the shark lasted 24 hours she took it back and got it replaced which was found dead this morning and now one of the tiger barbs is on its way and all have had the same simptoms.

I did a water change earlier and after reading some of the posts realised that theguppys had slightly redish gills and so does this tiger

Can anyone put their finger on it and advise me what to do, i'm hoping to eventually after gaining more knowledge move up to a much larger tank so this is a learning experience for me not a nice one but learning none the less

How many fish are in the tank.
It looks like bad water quality becuase of the gasping and red gills.
Sharks need larger tanks.
Immediate water change.
I would invest in a master liquid test kit of your own.
I would take a sample of your water to the lfs and tell them to write the readings down for you.

only 3 fish plec and a tiger unaffected and a sick tiger
how much of the water should i change

30%
Can you increase aeration.

yea small filter had an aeration fitting which was on and just turned air pump up for air stone

Red gills can be bad water quality to gill flukes.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing.
What type of plec is it as some grow massive.
I would research your fish before buying as some lfs don't tell the truth or don't know themselves.

I would rehome the tigar barbs to be honest they need larger tanks of at least 20 gallon, and need to be in groups of no less than six.
To be honest there not that many fish you can have for such a small tank.

I suppose fish TB is a possibility. I am unsure of how to treat, and have never had to diagnose with my own fish, so can't realy advise further. Wilder? any ideas? feel free to shoot me down in smoke. :good:

Batesy87, regardless of the exact problem, an imediate waterchange is required. 50% is a good amount to aim for. If poor water quality is the issue, the large waterchange will dilute the toxins. If illness is the issue, waterchanges are going to be difficult for a while.

Also, it may be an idea to ask your gf not to purchase you any more fish as a supprise. Fish should never be a non-researched buy, or you will run into problems. Also, I would avoid the store you used, as the fish she bought you are difficult to mix, and thus the store should have asked her more questions. Reputable dealers would have refused her sale. Answering with the stocking and tank size you have, would highlight to them that there would be an issue. For that reason, they would refuse sale. Not knowing what is in the tank should also make them edgy about selling those particular fish. In the UK, they have a duty of care, so selling a fish to someone who doesen't know the tank or stocking they are going into could be seen as a legal offence. There is a definate breach of the law if they sell you fish that they know will fight, as it is against the animal welfare act. Also, making such a purchase without asking sufficient questions could also land you in trouble, as you also have a duty of care.

Sorry if this reads a little bluntly, it was not writen as such.

Sorry missed the bent spine.
Bent spine means born that way, old age, fish tb to internal parasites.

Its hard to say tb with just a bent spine, if they have some other tb symtoms it would be easier.
I tend to look at internal parasites first when the fish just has a bent spine.

Signs of internal parasites are.
Being thin or bloated.
Long stringy white poo to clear mucas poo.
Enlarged anus to red inflamed anus.
Worms hanging from the anus.

Trust me i've learnt from my mistakes.. hopefully within a month these fish if still alive will be re-homed into a considerably larger tank hopefully 3-4 footer.. but i figured learn how to run and maintain a small tank before getting a large one i figured bigger is the same problems 10 fold

I apriciate all comments on this because as i said i'm new to this and i know its a mixture of mine and the lfs fault i should have researched before not after purchasing

the plec i'm not sure about i'm thinking sailfin it has a large dorsal fin almost as if spiked it's only about 2-3" atm

i'm think gill fluke it was only that one guppy with bent spine n i'm not sure if it looked like that before the guppys were rubbing and flicking but have not seen the barbs doin this... can this kill within 24 hours or is that a mixture of disease and bad water

Yes desease and bad water quality can be fast killers.

Signs of gill flukes and body flukes are.
Pale gills with excess mucas on them or red and inflamed.
Eratic swimming.
Pale or apaque body with excess slime.
Swimming in a jerky movement.
Flicking and rubbing.
Sores on the body of the fish.
Spitting food out.

Flukes cause bacterial infection as in there hooks they carry a nasty bacteria which enter the fish when the parasite pierces the skin.

I more concerned with the bent spine as that can be internal parasites aswell as fish tb.
Fish can flick with internal parasites.

they have all died with red gills they look as if they are bleeding and before the black shark died it went almost white and all the colour drained out off its fins same with this tiger barb

thanks

ok looks like its most probably that so lfs in the morning what med would suggest as the best to look for
and how much does a decent test kit go for

Need location for meds and test kit.
