My jewel cichlid spending most of its time at surface like it would when gasping for oxygen. But don't seem to be gasping. Been like this three weeks now all fish in the tank are healthy and going at there normal business. Water is fine. And water changes have been done as normal.there is no visible problems on the fish he looks healthy. He is 4 years old not sure if age is anything to do with it but thought I would put that in just in case. If any ideas please help.

Can you post tank size please.
How many fish and which type.
Can you post water stats please.

Has he been stressed due to being picked on?
Can he maintain balance in the water?
Is he able to get off the top of the tank, and bottom?
Does he rest on his side?
Does he look bloated as it hard to tell in the pic?
Does he try to swim but ends up turning up side down?
Does he head staind, or tail stand?
Does he dart around the tank?
Is he acting listless and lethargic?
Is he still eating?
What does it look like when he goes to the toilet?

300 litre tank
He not bloated and has been swimming as normal around the tank but seems to keep doing this.seen him eat but not as much as he would usually. He definitely not been picked on as he is slightly an alpha in the tank so the other fish seem to avoid him with aggression.he hasn't got swim bladder problem he swims normally and I know from experience from my acara signs and treatment of that

Was also looking to see if he had an internal bacteria infection.
It's hard to say what wrong with him if I honest. As he showing no illness symptoms apart from
spending a lot of time at the top of the tank.
Does he just look depressed.?

For now try soaking his food in garlic juice to stimulate appetite, and boost his immune system.

Does seem slightly depressed. But other than than that I'm baffled. Never heard of garlic juice soaking how does that work?

Fish can get depressed I was a bit surprised when I read it.
What about changing the tank around a bit to see if he goes back to normal.

You soak there food in garlic. It meant to be good to stimulate appetite and give the immune system a boost.
That's all I know. You can buy foods with garlic already added.

Just do a search on feeding garlic to fish. There lots of information on the net.
I would post your thread also in the cichlid part of the forum.

I've actually got some pure garlic juice so will separate him and soak a few pellets in it and try it. Anything is worth a try at the moment, had him since he was very young so really don't want to lose him.could understand if there was any other fish showing problems but everyone is healthy and happy.

What is the life span of a jewel cichlid?

Thanks.
Good Luck.
