One time, when I was just starting to keep fish, I had a 1 gallon wall-hanging tank (-*blush*-) and was keeping a black platy in it. I was never sure if it was a male or a female; at first its fins were shaped like any female's but after a few months the anal fin turned into a pointy triangle-not a gonopodium, just a pointy triangle-shaped fin. (I still feel guilty about that bowl's size. Thankfully I later got a 28g and plopped her in.)
Anyway, one time while I was changing her water, my parents suddenly decided we HAD to go to the store at that very moment, so I had to leave her in a plastic cup. I put the cover of my betta's pet-store container over the mouth of the cup and left.
We weren't very long in returning, but when we did, my mom took my sister to the bathroom and found Blackie stuck to the sink, barely breathing. She pulled her off and put her back in the glass, leaving most of her scales and even large chunks of fin still there. I can't tell you how badly my hands shook as I put the methylene blue mix antibiotic (it was some sort of betta medicine) I had not planned on having to use in her tank, but somehow I got the dose right, and amazingly, her fins and scales grew back, and she lived normally for 1 and a half years after that. I moved her into the 28 gallon, and I'd like to think that at least her final year and a half was peaceful and happy.
Another time, I did a water change on my big tank without noticing the newborn guppies, so that they were in the toilet when I saw them. I fished them out with my net and put them in my fry tank with some of that betta medicine to avoid infection, and they were fine.
And yet another time, I saw my zebra danios spawning, but thought no more of it, so that I was taken completely by surprise later when I saw dozens of threadlike fry adhering to the walls of the tank. Thinking they were parasites of some sort, I freaked out and used a paper cup to put them into the aforementioned bowl. Later the people on WWM helped me ID them, and I had a good laugh while caring for my baby danios. :)
More recently, I found a Cory cat in the chemistry lab at school that has not been cared for at all since last year, so I and another classmate took him under our wing. Somebody then decided it was a great idea to put him in a little vial with a small plant, under the sink in total darkness, and we couldn't find him from Monday till Thursday. He was still alive. Then someone put tap water without conditioner in his tank, filling it to the brim, and he is STILL alive. I think that fish is immortal, LOL :D
What about you? Have you had any close calls or unusual occurences with your fish before? I'm curious :D Fish are sometimes so hardy that it amazes me. They definitely want to live!

Not that long ago I had a Zebra Danio who jumped from his container while I was doing a water change. I almost stepped on him! My hands were shaking so bad and, without thinking I put him back into the tank with my hands, he swam around for a bit but every time he stopped, her behind would start to float up to the surface. I was so worried about him! But, after 2 weeks of daily 50% water changes, he's still alive and almost all of his scales have grown back. He's a fighter! :)
