As for how it was done... No not from the air.

I was standing in the middle of the shot, took a series of shots going round 360 degrees, two layers to get extra height ending up with 24 separate shots. Merged them into 1. Stretched into a square, then used photoshops polar coordinates filter to bend it round into a planet. Then added in a shot of the moon. So 25 photos.
