Hi all, my guppies have been pregnant a while now, I got given them about 3 months ago and they were already big then! One female has given birth to 6 young and most of them sadly didn’t make it because of the males (I got a new tank just for the females and babies). They just don’t seem to be giving birth and I’ve kept the tank at 26 degrees and crystal clear. Is there anything wrong with them? they’re all pretty much the size of the photo, What should I do!! (There are 7 of them)

How dark is the guppies gravid spot? This spot (near the fish’s anal fin) will darken as the fish gets closer to birth.

Usually a guppies gestation period will last 20-30 days, but some can be longer/shorter. 3 months is a long time...

They are full of intestinal worms (probably Camallanus thread worms). The one in the picture even has a stringy white poop, which is characteristic of intestinal worms.

Intestinal Worms like tapeworm and threadworms cause the fish to lose weight, continue eating and swimming normally, and do a stringy white poop. Fish can do this for months and not be too badly affected. In some cases, fish with a bad worm infestation will actually gain weight and get fat and look like a pregnant guppy. This is due to the huge number of worms inside the fish.

Livebearers like guppies, mollies, swordtails & platies are regularly infected with gill flukes and intestinal worms. If the fish are still eating well, then worms is the most likely cause.

You can use Praziquantel to treat tapeworm and gill flukes. And Levamisole to treat thread/ round worms like Capillaria and Camallanus. If you can't find these medications, look for Flubendazole, which treats both lots of worms.

Remove carbon from filters before treatment and increase aeration/ surface turbulence to maximise oxygen levels in the water.

You treat the fish once a week for 4 weeks. The first treatment will kill any worms in the fish. The second, third and forth treatments kill any baby worms that hatch from eggs inside the fish's digestive tract.

Treat every fish tank in the house at the same time to prevent cross contamination.

You do a 75% water change and complete gravel clean 24-48 hours after treatment. Clean the filter 24 hours after treatment too.

Do not use the 2 medications together. If you want to treat both medications in a short space of time, use Praziquantel on day one. Do a 75% water change and gravel clean the substrate on day 2 & 3. Treat the tank with Levamisole on day 4 and do a 75% water change and gravel clean on day 5, 6 & 7 and then start with Praziquantel again on day 8.

The water changes will remove most of the medication so you don't overdose the fish the next time you treat them. The gravel cleaning will suck out any worms and eggs that have been expelled by the fish. Repeating the treatment for 3-4 doses at weekly intervals will kill any worms that hatch from eggs. At the end of the treatment you will have healthier fish. :)

Thankyou for your reply! I watched a few videos a few weeks ago and the Gravid spot was quite dark on most and they were chilling at the top of the tank getting some oxygen. I thought they were going to give birth close to that time but they just haven’t!

Thankyou so much!! I had an inkling that they might have worms so I checked all the pet shops today and they were all out! What can I do to prevent them from dying in the mean time? I’ll check the shops again first thing Monday, but I’m so attached the them now I’d be devastated if they die ? is there any other treatment I could use to keep them okay for a bit longer? Also with them eating more, should I feed them a bit extra or less? They always act like they’re starving every time I pass the tank

Fish infested with parasitic worms should be fed more food, more often, to help them produce blood and that helps keep them alive for longer.

Worms suck the blood out of the fish through the intestinal wall and the fish usually die of low blood pressure and lack of blood. By feeding the fish more often, they can produce more blood and live longer.

Feed the fish 3-5 times per day with a variety of food for at least a month after they have been dewormed. Then reduce it to 1-2 times per day.

Do big water changes and gravel cleans every day or two, so the aquarium stays clean.
Make sure any new water is free of chlorine/ chloramine before it's added to the tank.

Thankyou! I have been feeding them a little extra so that's good! I've ordered some stuff online and hopefully it will be here by the end of the week! unfortunately a little lady passed away last night, however I did notice a few extra babies in the tank so she may have died after labour. I was giving them a temporary treatment for fungal bacteria as I had some on hand and it may have been too much for her. I will be fully cleaning the tank today and awaiting the worming treatment to arrive! Hopefully the rest can hold on a bit longer! Thank you so much for your help!!
