I went into pets at home today and get my water tested. My pH and everything was fine but my ammonia level is in between 0.5 and 1. The woman who did the test told me I had to empty the tank and refill it. I just laughed and left. Anyway, haven't been able to get any pure ammonia but as soon as I do I will get my ammonia level up to 5ppm and see what happens.

Hi Jamie, I assume you're running down the usual list in the UK? Boots, Homebase, B&Q, Boots-online. Jeyes Kleen-off in various stores. In all cases be sure there are no dyes, fragrances, surfactants or soaps. It should bubble like water when shaken, not foam. And you'll be getting a test kit?

Iv got the test kit. I got P@H to test it today so I have to do one less test.

Ok i have got the ammonia now. I hope its the right one. On the bottle is says "AmoKleen Household Ammonia contains Ammonia solution 9.5%".

Sounds about right :good:

I got one from boots and it says 9.5% too. On the calculater on the beginners section is also default set at 9.5 - That allows you to work out how many ml you need to dose your tank with for the cycle If you didn't already know

Ok cool. I think i got a barging as it was £1.60 for 500ml!

OK, good. Is the carbon out of your filter and its all loaded up with biomedia now?

It would be good for you to look around at other threads with "Fishless Cycle" in the title by other beginners on here. Pay particular attention to the first or main post where they lay out all the baseline stats of their situation (tank size, tap water stats. etc etc) and maybe model yours on some ideas from those. Some of them are quite good.

You'll want to be bringing your water up to fishless cycling temperature (84F/29C). Do you have an aquarium notebook for your permanent log?
