So I woke up this morning not expecting anything like this to happen. What happened is my heater must of shorted out or I have NO idea how but overnight it heated the water to 100*F!!!!! So my first 8 month tank ceased to exist today. :shout:

Ouch!!... Sorry to hear... Things like this tends to demotivate one...... Pick up the pieces and start all over again... don't be disheartened.... It happens to the best of us....

Just a little tip though.... Heaters is the one item in your tank most likely to fail..... The quality of heaters are normally determined by the price you pay..... If it is a 100w heater, or a 400w heater...... the prices in the same wattage may vary considerably..... just go for the most expensive one.... & it will outlast any of the cheapies x 4 times.....

A cheap heater is disaster.

I have a good friend who lost his entire 70 gallon tank due to heater malfunction.

Somebody should make a heater which has a max temp cutoff which would blow a small internal fuse (replaceable) in the event of malfunction and stop us boiling out little fishies. I am an electrician and it wouldnt be too difficult to produce. Maybe should come fitted with an audio alarm/blinking LED to alert us when/if a problem arrises.

Just an idea

If ever you go on holiday it also possibly a good idea to fit a small backup heater in your tank and set it maybe 8 degrees lower. This would stop your temp dropping too low in the event of broken heater
