i do have a question though can you keep males with females without bredding or will they kill each other?

I've never tried it; I've only the one betta. But I trust the FAQ here, http/www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=96682

Q: Can males and females live together?
A: Not unless you want a tank of dead fish. They should only be together if you are spawning, or if the tank is full of fry.
