hes been with my guppies for about a month now. he has been COMPLETELY fine with them..... until now.

there is a big gash in my female guppy's tail.she was also cowering below the filter at first. why would he suddenly do this?

Well its instinct really, bettas arent peaceful fish naturally. is this the same betta that attacked the mosquitofish?
 
Betta's and Guppies aren't able to co-exist due to the fact that the betta's mistake the fancy guppy tails as other betta's and attack them like this.
 
Not all Bettas are suitable for a community tank, even if they were good with tank mates in the beginning they may become stressed or aggressive! :(
 
Hmm flamboyant fins on other fish and bettas do not mix well as said before. Try him with shrimp and/or snails - the shrimp will be able to dance quickly out of his way and the snails can hide in their shells.
I have a single male platy in with mine along with an assassin snail and 3 amano shrimp and they all get along fine.
