My Betta Died After A Week...

So I bought a Crowntail Betta last week and put him in my 10G. He hasn't really eaten since I got him and spent most of his time patrolling the back of the tank. In the past couple days, I found him hidden more often than not and sometimes, just sitting flat on the gravel. Today, I found him dead when I got back from work.

I noticed his belly seemed bloated, but it wasn't that noticeable before he died. Here is a pic of him last night.

You can tell he has a bump, but it's no where near as bad as i've seen on the web...

Water params are 0 ammo, 0 nitrite, and maybe 5ppm nitrate. PH is at 7.8 and temp at 25C.

The only other fish are 8 neon tetras who are all active and hungry.

I know my PH is a bit high, but I can't believe that's what could have killed him. What's your diagnostic?

I dont know much about bettas but if he didnt eat from the start i would have to guess he was past the point of no return , what with the stress of shipping and whatnot. At least he lived out his final days in a comfortable enough looking tank. It's always sad to lose one without them getting a chance to reach full potential. Perhaps in the future your luck will change for the better.

Well, I went ahead and bought a new one. This time, I put him in a breeder box inside the 10g. This time I can make sure he'll eat for a couple days before letting him go freely around the tank.

Ok, so here is the new one... He is still a bit shy and nervous, a little hard to feed him, but my tetras don't seem to like bloodworms anymore (they jump on flakes like there is no tomorrow though), so that leaves him the time to get to them if he's hungry.

Let's wish him a better fate than the last one!

It sounds like the first one you bought either had an intestinal blockage from overeating (it's very important to not overfeed) or had internal parasites. Try feeding him pellets (at least 60% protein content and no wheat or wheat gluten fillers). Bloodworms are yummy but they won't give him all the nutrition he needs. They also float for a while so you can drop them one at a time right in front of his mouth so he can eat them up quickly. 4-6 pellets per day is the perfect amount
