huge water change. Just leave enough water for the fish to stay upright

should I empty the water out of the filter before I put it back on?

yes. I'm also thinking that running some carbon for a week won't do any harm

Yup, big water change.

I might even be tempted to do another one later once the water that's left has had a chance to mix again properly.

ok just filling it up again for the 1st time took everything out and cleaned it will do another 90% change tomorrow. just hope the fish will be ok

thanks for the help

Nice of your little one to attempt to give the fish breakfast. Now might be a good time to teach what the fish eat is different from what people eat.

You are headed the right direction. For the future, any contaminant added to the tank, the quick answer is always water change, large and immediate. While refilling consider the next course of action, if necessary. But step one to nearly all fishy emergencies start with: massive water change.

its about 3/4 full now and looking much better than before iv caught her a few times trying to put things in the tank but just tell her to stop, she's like a little spider girl she climes up on a ledge then opens up the lid. I did have mu old tank on the ledges but now iv moved it to the hall she thinks its a new spot for her to sit on. don't mind her sitting on it as its not to high and shes very steady on her feet just today the better half came up and she must have thought its now or never and just pored her breckki in lol arr god love her...

think tape the lid down now so she cant open it.

You know why they are so cute, don't you?

So, you don't kill them!     They can be the best part of your life, and yet the worst part at the same time, and yet you know that you wouldn't know what to do with yourself if they weren't there causing havoc!!!

why not teach her what fish can eat. Make it her job to feed the fishes and put the fish food in her hand and let her feed them. Teach her what food fishes can eat and that human food is for humans not for fishes. Teach her this is something Daddy and baby girl do together and only when Daddy is around. Kids are brighter than we often give them credit for and turning a negative into a positive often works better than the telling off

I have she knows the fish food and she knows how to open the door and she will hand it to me so we can feed them together just think today she thought she will give them some of her food instead. il make more of a big deal about feeding them with her see if that stops her wanting to feed them.

well all the fish all happier now and don't think any lasting damage only thing is water is not as clear as id like, was crystal before lol

Another water change will help... and time...  and more water changes.   The clarity will return.

maybe pop in some carbon tomorrow when the shops open back up. As we've all said, you'll probably have to do further water changes for a couple of days. You could also try adding a fine filter floss to polish the water aswell. That will filter out the fine particles :)
