Common name/s: Mono, fingerfish

Scientific name: Monodactylus argentius

Family: Monodactylidae

Origin: Brackish and costal marine waters of Africa and Asia

Maximum size: 10"

Care: Although juviniles are usually sold in freshwater at most LFS the fish is actually a brackish/marine fish that requires the water to have a specific gravity (SG) of 1.010 or more to be happy, in freshwater the fish becomes prone to fungal infections. They are a schooling fish and should be kept in groups of atleast 3 which due to their large adult size means a minimum of a 75 gallon tank should be used. They will prey on small fish so tankmates should be 3" or larger. Since monos live in areas heavily influenced by tidal changes the tank should be set up with a strong current provided by a powerhead or two. The tank should be kept at a temperature between 22c and 26c.

Feeding: A truely omnivorous fish monos will eat almost anything, krill, small pieces of fish and lettuce are preffered

Sexing: The sexes cannot be told apart

Breeding: Unknown

A second species, Monodactylus sebae is sometimes, (rarely), seen. These are shorter in the body thus appear more vertically elongated. They lack the yellow colourations, basically silver and black. Care etc. is as with M. argentus.
