Mollies aggresive?

I was wondering, are mollies aggresive as we have had 4 silver mollies for about 2-3 weeks and they have been doing really well 2 males and 2 females.

One of the males had a gold trim to his dorsal fin and was obviously the dominant one, then over the last week or so the second male started to show signs of this trim developing. There has been a lot of chasing around and then totally out of the blue this evening we found the smaller male dead at the bottom of the tank

he fed fine, the water seems fine and he was swimming around ok earlier,

do you think it could have been a territorial thing?

are there any other possible causes do you think? its a real mystery and very sad as we feel we should have protected the lesser male more

i think you should have 3 females per male and then for every extra male another female i might be wrong but i read this somewhere

Yep, Mollies can be aggressive, especially males. And you had a very small male to female ratio. Ideally, it should be one male to 2-3 females. This should spread out the agression a bit, because the males can pay more attention to the females then the the other male. It also prevents on female from getting all the male's attention, and getting stressed.

If you ever were to get another male molly, you can sometimes help out aggression by having lots of plants, rocks, caves..etc. A place for the bullied one to go, to get some rest. Of course, if the aggression gets too bad, you may have to remove the one that is being bullied. And of course, make sure they have a big enough tank, so there is plenty of swimming room.

I kind of made the same mistake.I bought 2 male and 2 female mollies 1 week after I bought them the smaller male was dead.

male mollies are also, uhm how should i word this, over active, when my dalmation molly was givin birth, the daddy kept on nuzzling her.
