Does ANYONE have tips for encouraging mollies to breed i,ve tried everything even though there mating the female does'nt seem to be pregnant WHATS GOING ON CAN ANYONE HELP ME! :thanks: :fish:

slightly higher temp, depending what other fish are in there, more food, live food if u can, makes em nice n randy.

Give the fish clean, stable water. Higher temperatures may encourage mating as stated above. Basically Mollies will breed naturally in most good environments. They do like a variety of foods. Peas may be something else you want to add into the mix.

IF you put a floating cube of bloodworm in (I don't defrost it) I will put money that the mollies are first ther stabbing at it until they come free.

My tip is don't do anything. I just put mine in the tank (26C not hot cos I have tetras) and they have bread several times.

As long as they're not stressed and the water is good they seem to breed, for me anyway. Good food for all my fish.

  1. Adding salt.
  2. Feeding good foods/a balanced diet.
  3. Try adding in some veggies, like zucchini, cucumber, peas (blanched, or steamed, preferably).
  4. Have 2-3 females per male.
  5. Give the females plenty of hiding places, so they aren't stressed out.
  6. Make sure that they aren't actually giving birth, and that the fry are eaten. If they fry are being eaten, add floating plants/hiding places, or look into a breeding tank. Or possibly just catching the fry once they are born, and putting them in a breeder trap/net.
Um....that's all I can think of for now.

Edit - Well, okay then, everyone has mentioned my tips. Meh.

i've done nothing, and mine breed like bunnies [unfortantly]... especially now that my fry are grown up.... and my boy::girl ratio is waaaaaaay off.

My mollies are like rabbits as well. We have just had to separate our fry into boys and girls, coz the boys were constantly mollesting the girls and it totally grossed my husband out!

I feed mine frozen brine shrimp and frozen blood worms in the evening and in the morning I feed them tropical total flakes. They are always hungry though and as long as they are well fed and have nice clear water they are happy.

I find that if the water gets cloudy, they stop having fry and also if the plants are not thickly planted in the tank they don't like it.

I hope that helps in some way mate.

Good luck getting little squirts of your own. :good:

I know this is going to sound stupid, but I do stupid things all the time.

Make sure you have males and females. You'd be surprised how many people think they have a mating pair, but in reality they have all the same sex.

Reduce stress for them. Like the rest of the people are saying here, provide clean, stable water for the fish. Feed them a variety of healthy foods, and give the plenty of hiding places.

Mollies naturally are baby making machines, so it's possible that conditions aren't ideal for them if they aren't producing. Most people have the opposite problem and tear out their hair with the overflow of fry. Good luck!
