:/ can you have small stone on one side of the tank and sand on the other? the reason I'm asking is I've just read that polypterus prefere a sand substrate but I have several other large fish one of them being a Green Terror who likes digging

I have got around the problem by using very fine gravel (2mm),i am not a fan of sand in tanks as it is messy, hard to clean, difficult to grow plants in and can clog up filters.

Theres no reason why not although you would have to use some kind of divider to keep them seperate otherwise your fish will soon have them mixed through. Why not use the finer gravel for the whole tank?(although if you did replace it all you would have to do it a bit at time to prevent the loss of too many bacteria).

this is why I'm asking and I think CFC has already put me off the idea of sand in my tank and was thinking about 2mm stone on one side and larger on the other
