Mixed Substrate

After reading through various threads about people switching to sand, I'm about ready to give it a try myself.

My thoughts are that I should just get to argos and buy some play sand and then mix in or lay as a base some laterite / flourite.

What is the best thing to add to sand for plants and in what proportions?

To me laterite makes more sense. The problem with sand is the laterite/fluorite will come to the surface, but because you need less laterite then it stays at the bottom better. Although in my 5 gallon I've got 50/50 sand laterite, and no laterite has come to surface yet, but maybe because I dont play around with the plants to bring it to the surface?
