I have been using Seachem Fresh Trace to increase the GH in my tank. It is hard to find and does not last long does anyone know of any good products? I need something to add trace minerals to my water. I am in the US but am willing to pay to have something shipped. Would just like to find a good product to help my fish. Thanks all.

I would have thought that regular water changes would replace lost minerals?

Until recently my city tap water was quite hard. Now there are almost no minerals at all in the water. It is so soft you cannot get a kh or gh reading from it. Because of this I was forced to seek out mineral additive for my tanks and my pond.

sorry if this is a ridiculous response, but, could you use bottled mineral water?

In the US, you can get a product called RO right for extremely low mineral content water. It is designed for reconstituting RO water for use with fish and the instructions assume you have undetectable levels of minerals in the water. It lasts only as long as the water is in the tank so you must add some with each water change if you are using RO or rain water.

Thanks. Is that the one by Kent? I picked some of that up yesterday. Have been slowly raising my gh. I am up to 6. How quickly can I raise it? I have been doing a little every four hours.

Slower is always better with any water parameter change. You will want to keep track of the amount you are adding per gallon so that you can mix up that concentration in the bucket for your water changes.

I have a log and am writing down every scoop I add and the results on the water.

Is domectic water softener being used in the home? If so,, maybe try pulling some water from outside spigot where garden hose attaches, or neighbors might let you borrow water from their source, assuming that it isn't also being filtered through water softener unit. Just a thought.

No water softener is used in the home. I tried testing both of my neighbors water and got the same results. I contacted the city and they informed my that they added a softener due to complaints about hard water. I am not sure what they added but my water went from having a gh of 10-11 on month to levels so low I can't get a reading with an API test the next month. The lfs suggested I get buckets of river water and treat it with antibacterial meds and antiparasitic meds then use that. However, I live in an old mining town and most of our rivers and creeks have left over traces of mining minerals like mercury and arsnic and I do not want to subject my fish to that. I picked up RO right by kent and seachem equalibrium and will see which works better. I am testing each on two different tanks. Which ever works I will have to find very large buckets as I also have a 400+ gallon pond.
