Micks Fishless Cycle

Hi all,day 5 of my cycle,just tested ammonia it looks like it has come down to about 2.4,so i tested for nitrite it is between 0.8 and 1.6 a bit hard to tell but is in between these.Is this near to what i should be expecting at this stage. Thanks mick

Hi yeah that sounds like things are starting to drop down through the week, this process of the ammonia and nitrite dropping will get faster and faster till you get to 12 hour periods and then you are ready for fish

What test kit are you using btw? Not familiar with those readings guides?

Ah okay not familiar with that one is it a liquid based test? As long as you see a fall in the ammonia readings then a rise in nitrite and then a gradual fall in nitrite thats good then when you get to the point that nitrite and ammonia and just falling together thats when you start timing it and getting ready to work out the 12 hour window of ammonia that you need

There is nothing wrong with the Nutrafin kit Wills. It just uses different color charts to the API kit.
As far as the cycle progress, any drop at all of ammonia in the first week or less is a good sign. It means that you have some of the right bacteria and merely need to culture them to get the filter cycled.

i got the nutrafin test and the api and both work well. glad to see your cycle is starting to move

My Ammonia took 24 days to drop to 0 (stayed at 2 for ages)so yours looks to be going very well to m

Mick, you might want to start editing your first post (or maybe I'm missing it elsewhere?) with daily one-liners to log results. Eventually its going to get hard for us to read through the entire thread to find each days results. A single day's results are not as meaningful as seeing a string of results from multiple days. You can look around to see how some others do it.
