i noticed 2 of my ruby barbs had signs of fin rot so i got a new 25 litre tank with heater and filter, i addded water from my main tank which was changed the day before. i added fin rot treatment but both rubys where dead this morning.
did i make a mistake in not cycling my medical tank first?
oout of all my fish ive only had problems with the ruby barbs and the albino barbs, are these fish just more prone to desease any advise is apreciated.

Ammonia would build up very quickly in an uncycled tank and that is probably what killed your fish, yes.

Next time, take a little bit of mature media from the filter in the main tank and put that in the filter of the hospital tank.

Those barbs are normally very hardy. How long has your main tank been running and how did you cycle it? Have you tested the water? What fish are in there?

my tank has been running since january i done a fishles cycle, i test my water every other day and it is fine. i change 20% of water once a week
i have
2 x torpedo barb
3 x albino barb
3 x tiger barb
3 x green barb
3 x black widow tetra
1 x ruby barb after 2 dying this morning.

I don't have much experience of ruby barbs, but they could have been nipping at each other, or the tigers might have been doing it. That could damage the fins enough to let the fin rot take a hold.

What are the numbers from your tests, and how big is the tank?

ph-7.6
amonia-0
nitrite0
nitrate 10
my tank is a 100 litre corner unit. i havent seen any nipping going on, all the other fish are fine and seem happy. i have 2 real plants and one plastic with a peice of bog wood.

It's quite rare to actually see the nipping taking place, at least IME; fish appear to be very sneaky about it :/

I had a ram that attacked and killed nine false neons over three days before I managed to catch her at it, and that's in a tank right next to my computer desk.
