I really wish I'd got video of this, the photos don't do justice to her determination.

Martha eats frozen mussels & cockles, but once a week gets a treat of live river shrimp.
Today, she couldn't wait for the shrimp to be aclimatised to the water and decided to attack the bag and free them herself.

Again and again she struck at the bag with open mouth untill we took pity on her and released the shrimp.

Two minutes later there were twitching legs and heads strewn around the tank in a scene reminicent of something from a Tarantino movie.

And Martha looking like Jabba the Hutt.

Um.. they cost 60pence a portion.. that's about 40 to 50 shrimp. The bag in the photo is one portion - 60pence.

This is from Swallow Aquatics in Colchester.

What size of tank do those puffers have to have?
When Martha's grown up, she will be up to a foot and a half long, so she's going to need a pretty big tank.

At the moment she's only three and a half inches and is in a 18 gallon tempory tank while her 60 gallon grow-out tank cycles. Later on we'll move her to a custom-built tank.

Planning for that already, she's already added a half inch in length in the three weeks we've had her!

As for the river shrimp, they're just ordinary esturine shrimp as found in rock pools all around the coast of europe (and other temperate areas worldwide), but these have been captive bred for the aquarium trade. I'm surprised that no-one else has come across them.

Swallow Aquatics has a huge amount delivered every friday and sells them in 'portions' at 60p

They are coolwater brackish shrimp and die soon after being added to the tropical freshwater tanks, but they can be acclimatised if done very slowly.

Of course, Martha doesn't give them time to succumb to the freshwater....

Sorry, American here. :p

Our local LFs sells a fresh-water species of "feeder shrimp" at 15 for $1.50; I live in Hawaii, and we have a number of native fresh and brackish water shrimp species. I'm not sure if our feeders are native or the common "ghost shrimp." They can be a useful 'maintanence' tank inhabitant if left around long enough, but I don't mind if my fish pick them off. None of the species I keep are rabid shrimp enthusiasts like this happy puffer. :D

Well Martha's out of the small tank and into her four-foot grow out tank. It looks very strange with just one four inch fish in a four foot tank!
